I recently snagged a brand new 179g Axis from Maple Valley Discs. Unlike some of the bigger companies MVP is unfamiliar to me, so I was not sure what to expect on the first throw. Several outings later I feel as if I have seen some of what it can do.

First off a description. Great feeling plastic (Proton) makes you confident it is chuckable, capable of smacking a tree now and again. I have a translucent purple version with a black ring (GYRO they call it) all the way around the edge. It really is an evil looking disc that wants to be thrown with some oomph.

Toss factor is super high. It can be thrown a number of ways but the traditional RHBH seems like its forte in my mind.

Range is massive, but for me it does good from somewhere about 200' out all the way to the basket. I can see some people putting with it, especially in heavier weights. I am guessing some people with a big gun slinging arm could also throw this from 300' plus, but I save those shots for drivers. So far I have thrown it in some heavy gusts as well as calm breezes and it does well in both, with a slight tendency to climb up in windy conditions. Otherwise it holds it's height very well, so feel free to really approach with an aggressive mentality.

Speed wise I call this disc fast. It is NOT a disc that glides all pretty and gentle. It is smooth, and stable, but goes at your target with some zip. I suppose the weight is a factor there. Thrown at a high speed it can actually creep out a bit and then level in for the kill. Low speed seems to be fairly straight still, but with a subtle hyzen and a fast descent that cuts left quickly at the end.

Overall I am still deciding about how I like this disc. I think for someone who is a no frills thrower and attacks the basket (like myself) this could be a great weapon. For a beginner this disc is like gold. One of my disc brothers is a 1 year tosser and seems to throw it accurately with little effort. I love the durability that oozes from it, but since it is brand new please look for updates on that.

Discgolf has been the one new force above all others when it comes to Nicks downtime activities. "I have 3 kids and a design company. It can get realllll rough dealing with the fam and clients all week if I can't make it out for at least 18 a couple times." Closing out the end of his 3rd full season, Nick has honed his skills along side his Metro Detroit based disc crew, the Disc Golf Pro Amateur Disc Golf team (Nick informed me this is not a serious name and you should laugh at it). Nick throws RHBH predominantly, but is mastering the Thumber, Tommy, and more "grudgingly," as he puts it, the RHFH shot. "I don't know why that shot has escaped any consistency from me but...it has!" Nick is a self proclaimed student of the game. He takes a serious love for facts, data, and learning the ins and outs of his passions in to disc golf. It shows. He has quickly learned the game and tosses Even or better at some of his areas best courses. Currently he plays a bag of 8-12 discs, and holds another 10 he rotates as needed. "I love all sorts of makes and styles of discs. My favorite shot is a RHBH helix with my Leopard, or a crazy tommy/thumber with my Wildfire." He hopes to bring his energy, knowledge, and solid research to you from a non-experts perspective, along side humor and experiences we can all relate to.
