From the Manufacturer...

The Katana is built with the finesse thrower in mind. Recommended downwind driver. Hit the angle right and watch it bolt out of sight. The physical characteristics resemble a Boss with the flight characteristics of a Sidewinder on steroids. Master the technique of Katana and rule the course.

  1. The Katana is more or less an understable Boss according to Innova. Very limited runs were released as fundraisers for the Japan Open 2010 in Champion, Pro and R-Pro. Released in Pro plastic in regular line up on the 18th of January 2010. Released at the end of November in Star plastic as a fundraiser for the PDGA Worlds 2010. Available in the regular line-up since the 3rd of May 2010.

The Katana is by far the fastest disc in my bag and for good reason. When I started playing again I bought a Katana because it was the new HIGH SPEED DRIVER at the time, and of course it was going to instantly add 150’ to my game. This unfortunately was not the case. I learned to throw big FH flex shots with it and it worked out ok. So the season of 2011 came around and I decided to disc down in the hopes that I could improve my form. It worked wonders for my game and for most of the summer the only use the Katana got was for long wide open holes with very little obstructions in the fairway. Enter fall 2011, one day I decided to bring the Katana out for some field practice and was very pleasantly surprised by the results. I was able to release the disc flat and it would flex slightly to the left (RHFH) flatten out and fly on a frozen rope for 325’ before starting a very predictable right fade for another 50’ or so. I was shocked by how predictable the Katina’s flight had become. The Katana is now my go to for long par 4’s that I need that little bit of extra D for. I no longer need a ton of room to get good distance and I know what the disc is going to do every time I throw it.

When it comes to plastic I only throw the Katana in Pro because I really like the feel and beat in characteristics of Pro plastic. I have not tried a Champion one yet and may have to try and find one to see if I would like it. I personally don’t like R-Pro or Star so I don’t I will ever get one in either of those plastics. I have heard that the Katana is a bit more squerly in Star but have no experience to back that up.

All in all the Katana is a solid disc if you have the form to throw it although I would not recommend it for a beginner. It does have some trouble in the wind so on windy days I will grab something more overstable.

  2. Star PLastic- Im predominately a FH player but when the line calls for a nice backhand i pull out the Katana, comes out the hand really nicely and i can predict a nice swooping S turn every time when released with a touch of anhyzer, I have thrown it a few times FH but it tends to turn over if I throw it too hard. Good for low backhands between and under trees and a very predictable finish.

  3. I am quite fond of the Katana. I have a 175 Pro, and it is actually quite nice. It has enough high-speed stability to keep it from turning over right out of your hand while not having so much fade that it meathooks. I have been using it for long, gliding hyzer lines off the BH side, and it has worked very well. Someone with more power than I have would probably like it a lot on straight, low lines. All in all, a solid disc.

  4. I hate this disc. It’s rated at a -3 High speed turnover, but it should be 0, because it’s tough to turnover. My Katana is star plastic and 164g. I don’t know if it needs to get worked in more, but I get way more distance out of a Boss, Wraith and even my Valkyrie.
Pass on this disc, especially if you are a beginner/ amateur.
