MVP calls their overmold design process GYRO technology. The main point is to get as much mass on the outer edge of the disc as possible. This creates a greater gyroscopic effect, which tends to make discs fly with a more forward dominant flightpath regardless of the angle the disc is flying on as well as holding their spin later into the flight.
From the very beginning, many of the Ion’s features were purely designed to produce a great feel in the hand. The new Ions have made several changes to make their feel even better. First, the sharp flash point along the bottom of the disc has been completely removed from the mold, so the bottom of the Ion’s bead is now completely smooth. This alone greatly improves the feel significantly and sets the Ion apart from the putters of other manufacturers. MVP has also removed the sandblasted texture from the underside of the disc. Now the Ion has a smooth bottom like traditional discs, and in my opinion delivers a much better grip and feel in the hand. The raised lettering on the underside of the disc has also been removed, so there is now nothing underneath the Ion’s hood to catch your fingers on. The last and least significant change in terms of feel is the addition of MVP’s logos embossed on the overmold.
HSS: This is one area where the Ion has seen some change. Where the older Ions tended to push out of a hyzer release or turn a little from a flat release, the new ones do not turn at high speeds. This is especially true of the mediums stiffness Ions. On a really hard rip (over 350′) the softs still show just a hint of turn.
The Ion remains a very versatile disc, making an excellent putter inside and outside the circle and an unparalleled putter-driver/approach disc.
The new Ions are close in stability to Gateway’s Wizard and Innova’s KC Pro Aviar/JK Pro Aviar-x, though they are a touch faster and glide better than either.
I love these things, I also used multiple putters for years and couldn’t settle in. I’ve firmly committed to the Ion for over a year now and as my throw smooths out I’ve added 50′ to my putter range, I’m up to about 220′ with a putter now.
On the plus side they are fast and glidey, they fit in your hand well and are stable enough you can put a lot of power on them. With the even weight distribution and GYRO technology you can make almost any shot if you can figure out the nose angle etc, as they fly true to how you throw them. The thing I like most is that I can either spin putt or lob them with equal confidence.
The softs generally have a touch less HSS and more LSS (S-Flight) , whereas the mediums have a straighter flight. I find once you force the medium to anhyzer it holds it better than the softs.
On the down side, the GYRO balancing whatever can help them roll a long way from the basket if they get on edge and makes it more important to get those putts nose down center of basket to help them stick. They are a little slippery when wet.
I started playing disc golf rotating putters, when I found the S Ion I fell in love and never looked back. I am spin putter 100% of the time. The Ion works perfect for my spin putting due to its great glide and perfect stablity.
As a putter it holds its intended flight pattern for a very long time. This allows for pin point distance putts without having to hyzer putt. The champion type plastic ensures that you will not need to replace putters very often. The S Ion is flexable and gripy, grabing chains when you dont think it would have a chance.
It is also my go to upshot disc 250 ft in. As an upshot disc it has the same great qualites that it has as a putter, glide and a predictably straight finsh. Hyzer it in and watch it settle under the basket everytime.
Revolutionary disc. Midrange distance in a putter package. Softs tend to fly like Eagles, i.e. a little turn and some healthy fade whereas Mediums are more akin to Teebirds, better HSS and finish straighter. Both are great for driving b/c they glue themselves onto lines but the Softs are better b/c they hardly kick off of trees compared to other discs. Mediums make better putters due to their firmness. These are also money for FH and long approaches. Super controllable, super straight thanks to the gyroscopic overmold being heavier than the core plastic.
